Casino Royale. By Charlie


  • rare to see black and white in modern movie
  • no sound for the beginning and little introduction, we see a new character and where he is going, what floor he is on etc. but no really location besides Prague and in his hotel/ office.
  • irony is used as we pan round to an over the shoulder shot however the shoulder is not visible. there is just a chair, then we see the safe is open meaning he is not alone in his apartment.and by extension allowing us to predict who is in the chair. 
  • mise en scene... a rich well informed man, with connections, this is assumable by the film, 007 has a reputation for dealing with sophisticated antagonist. 
  • no soundtrack and only diagetic sound is used.
  • then a whistley unnerving melody is played as the draw opens to reveal a gun and add an introduction to the premonition of violence being imminent. 
  • sudden flash to violence scene in the toilet (still in B&W) loud fast paced music to keep up with the fast cutting and music.
  • then we cut back to the two conversing about the lactation of his gun, this turns the situation around, he has gone from held at gunpoint to no threat. 
  • next we cut back to the fast paced action scene in the toilet, again 007 proves he is in control by disarming the attacker and murdering him. 
  • again a cut back to the two men, of which the negotiations break down and 007 shoots him. 
  • finally another cut to 007 picking up his gun and finishing off the enemies in the toilet. this allows the viewers to be aware that bond has defeated and came out victorious "mission accomplished" 
  • the lighting is low key, then when we cut to the toilet scene the lighting is much lighter.the few words spoken and large amount of action creates a specific atmosphere keeping the audience engaged but on the edge of their seat.
  • locations used really represent the styles of character. bond (as trademarked) in a tuxedo (top image), with a pistol. prepared and ready to fight, the man in the toilet dressed in a casual shirt (top image), perhaps not expecting action.
  • as a generalisation i feel that the mod is created using many components but the main component being mystery of names, location and motive.
